Chaos Sphere Puzzle
2 pieces. 12 colors. No symmetry. One extraordinary challenge!
Chaos Sphere is a fascinating geometric assembly puzzle that combines mathematics, creativity, and a truly unusual design.
Unlike traditional spherical puzzles, Chaos Sphere has no intrinsic symmetry. It consists of 12 uniquely shaped curved pieces, each in a different color. Every piece follows an arc of a great circle on a sphere, creating a beautiful and seemingly chaotic structure.
The puzzle was developed through a collaboration between Oskar van Deventer, Robin Houston, and Diogo Sousa.
Inspired by Derek Bosch's Icosahedron Frequency-3 Sphere, Oskar challenged his collaborators to create a spherical structure without any intrinsic symmetry. Diogo discovered a remarkable 12-edge graph that not only met this requirement but was also proven to have the minimum possible number of edges. Surprisingly, the graph is also self-dual!
Robin then optimized the positioning of the pieces, while Oskar developed the physical prototypes.
The result is a colorful, 80 mm diameter sphere that looks like a mathematical work of art.
The challenge: Assemble all 12 curved pieces into a perfect sphere. With no symmetry to guide you and every piece being different, finding the correct arrangement can be extremely difficult.
This is a challenging puzzle, so don't hesitate to use photos of the assembled sphere as a reference!
