Propp Tiles

Propp Tiles is a fascinating magnetic sliding and rotation puzzle based on an invention by mathematician James (Jim) Propp and designed in this version by Oskar van Deventer.

The puzzle consists of numbered domino-shaped tiles arranged in a rectangular grid. Each tile contains embedded magnets, and instead of simply picking up or sliding individual pieces, you must use the included magnetic tool to lift a group of two or three tiles at once.

Once lifted, the entire group can be rotated and placed back into the grid. These unusual moves are used both to scramble the puzzle and to solve it.

The goal sounds simple: restore all of the numbered tiles to their correct order. But the restrictions created by the grouped moves make Propp Tiles much more interesting than an ordinary tile puzzle.

There is another mathematical twist. If the tiles are assembled randomly, there is a high probability that the resulting position cannot be solved at all. This raises an intriguing question behind the puzzle: what is the probability that a random arrangement is actually solvable?

Propp Tiles combines mechanical movement, magnets, logic and mathematics into a very unusual puzzle that feels unlike a traditional sliding puzzle.
